Notice of rate structure change and rate increases

The Cumming City Council voted to raise water, sewer, and garbage rates at the City Council Meeting on February 15, 2022. Thank you for your patience and understanding during this process. There are many reasons why the council voted to implement a rate increase. Some of these reasons are as follows:

  1. The City conducted a rate study. The results of the study indicated that a rate increase is necessary at this time to ensure the continued efficient operation of the water and sewer system.
  2. Inflation has impacted all aspects of water and sewer treatment including but not limited to the chemicals, power, labor, and maintenance.
  3. Water rates have not been increased since 2010. Sewer rates have not been increased since 2018.
  4. Water and Sewer fees pay for replacing aging infrastructure. These project costs continue to escalate.
  5. The City’s rates remain low when compared to similar communities in our area.
  6. Growth and capital improvement project costs continue to escalate.
  7. The US Army Corps of Engineers is charging more for raw water as well as the City’s pro-rata share of the Lake’s maintenance costs.
  8. The City is required by the State of Georgia to encourage water conservation and build the incentive into our rate structure.
